Why Does America Welcome Immigrants?

As I reed the enclosed article, I ask my self, why indeed America welcomes Immigrants, still today? Now day, there is no need to “welcome immigrants”. Illegal immigration is the thing to do. You are a sucker if you try to come into this country by legal means. Illegal immigrants walk in and out of this country without any problem what so ever. They have no regard for our laws and see no need for “legal” entrance or papers to be here. Why should they go to all the trouble of getting in line for anything? They have the federal government on their side, pondering to their “rights”; giving illegal’s what a U.S. citizen can’t even qualify for.

We hear the president and most politicians -specially when running for office or re-election- talk about “reform” as a welcome door for illegal’s. They spend their time, assuring them that “it’s ok”, and since this is a “rich country”, it’s the compassionate thing to do. They ponder to the electorate in favor for open borders in hope for their votes, knowing that the majority of the American people oppose that. They offer no solutions; just continue to disregard the laws in place. They surely don’t talk about the consequences, and the cost this has in our nation and how it impacts all American’s, including those here illegally. Our country and States are broke with endless entitlements for illegal immigrants that we can’t afford. From free healthcare, school programs, free education grants, food programs, clothing and housing. We are going under, and the illegal immigrants, who are in most part uneducated, will suffer the most. This is a society that because we have made it easy and lawless to be here, doesn’t have to assimilate with the rest of the country. They keep to themselves, to “protect” one another, making it that they never learn the language or have any responsibilities tour this Country.

The sad true is that they are helping downgrade America, what they hoped to be part of. The grand “American dream” is not what it used to be; now anyone can be here. It’s not a special privilege; you don’t have to earn it. For those of us that did things honorably, sometimes taken years to acquire, learned it’s history and the language, assimilated, are proud of the American flag, our soldiers, pay our taxes and contribute to our community, we consider this great Nation OUR Country too. We know that to preserve it, it must not be a FREE ride.

Across the country, lawmakers are working to limit illegal immigration and reform policy so that more individuals can honorably and legally become American citizens. Last year’s notorious immigration battle in Arizona was met with hostility from pro-illegal immigration forces who misunderstood the Founders’ intent for a legal and meaningful naturalization process into America.

Now, the same kind of battle is heating up in Alabama. With an estimated 120,000 illegal immigrants (according to the Pew Hispanic Center), Alabama leaders felt the federal laws weren’t protecting the state adequately. Considering the population has increased fivefold what it was 10 years ago, one can sympathize.

Alabama’s new law is currently being met by a lawsuit from the Department of Justice (DOJ) but the case is unwarranted. As Heritage’s Matt Mayer writes:

The argument that state and local governments mustincur enormous fiscal and societal costs, asserting that all aspects of immigration (legal or illegal) are entirely the purview of the federal government, is constitutionally suspect.

…Alabama’s new law is sweeping only in the sense that it encompasses many laws passed in other states in one bill (E-verify, voter identification, benefits, immigration status, etc.). Most of the provisions are consistent with positions upheld in court or not subject to legal challenges.”

The Declaration of Independence states that all men—not just all Americans—have a God-given right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That said, the task of the US government is to secure the rights of its own citizens—not mankind. The liberties and opportunities that the US affords its citizens are the main reason why so many people long to immigrate here. And because America is built on the idea of universal equality, all may become citizens in principle (not in practice of course).

The naturalization process isn’t automatic the minute one crosses over a country line, though. It requires education, dedication and commitment to the American way.  Alexander Hamilton wrote that prospective immigrants should “learn the principles and imbibe the spirit of our government; and to admit of a philosophy at least, of their feeling a real interest in our affairs.”

Heritage’s Dr. Matthew Spalding writes in the “Understanding America” series “Why Does America Welcome Immigrants?”:

Individuals have a natural right to emigrate from their homeland, but that does not entail a right to immigrate to this country without the consent of the American people as expressed through the laws of the United States.

…When the American people welcome an immigrant, naturalization in America works differently than it does in other countries. A foreigner can immigrate to France or Japan but never become truly French or Japanese. But a foreigner of any ethnic heritage or racial background can immigrate to the U.S. and become, in every sense of the term, an American.

Such a citizenship is a privilege and America’s openness to immigrants from all religions, backgrounds, and cultures makes it an exceptional one. The latest crackdown on illegal immigration in Alabama doesn’t mean things are changing from that view.

While the arguments surrounding illegal immigration are fiery, they ultimately center on a common desire to expand America’s melting pot. Despite the disagreement on methodology, America overwhelmingly welcomes immigrants as no other country does. Spalding writes:

While there are differences of opinion about the number of immigrants the nation should accept and the process by which they should become citizens, there has always been widespread, bipartisan agreement that those who come here should become Americans.

Many foreigners risk death and violence every single day in hopes of setting foot on American soil. The promise of the American dream lures men of every shade and culture because of the exceptional freedom and opportunity offered within our borders and these basic human rights expressed in the Declaration of Independence are such that men would leave their homes and risk their lives for an opportunity to exercise them.

“America welcomes newcomers while insisting that they learn and embrace its civic culture and political institutions, thereby form­ing one nation from many peoples—e pluribus unum,” writes Spalding.

Thus, in the legal immigration process, individuals receive specific education in history, policy, and political ideas so they become assimilated to the country in the most natural way possible. Without such education, it would be difficult to grasp the “fundamental sense [that] America is an exceptional nation not because of what it does—but because of what it believes,” writes Heritage’s David Azzerad.

To understand America, it is imperative to recognize the importance of immigrants to our nation’s past, present and future. It is also important to note those immigrants’ essential allegiance to the American political order first and foremost.

Spalding writes:

In the end, a confident policy to assimilate immigrants must be understood as part of a larger renewal of our principles, a reaffirmation of what we hold to be self-evident. After all, it is our common recognition of transcendent truths that binds us all together, and binds us across time to the patriots of 1776.

Nearly everyone in America descended from immigrants at some point in history and thank goodness for a wonderful, welcoming country that said to our ancestors, “Welcome home.”

As a measure of community service, I round up my Boy Scout Troop periodically to meet with my friend, and Patriot Chaplain, Lurone Jennings, an inner-city community pastor.

We gather early on Saturday mornings to serve families who are struggling to make ends meet, most of them elderly and living in squalor. After cleaning around their shacks, providing meals and praying over those families, we always reconvene with Pastor Jennings for a time of fellowship.

Recently, I asked Lurone to explain what factors he thinks have contributed most to poverty in our city and nation. Without missing a beat, he said, “Poverty Pimps,” referring to those who are elected to public office on the promise of a handout rather than a hand up — this from a man who has devoted his life to serving those most irreconcilably ensnared by those pimps.

Handouts, of course, are a much easier sell than hand-ups, but the consequences in terms of human dignity and society are devastating.

Promising to give a man a fish rather than encouraging him to take up fishing to provide for himself is one of the clearest philosophical delineations between the worldviews of contemporary liberals and conservatives.

Lurone explained that, while New Deal and Great Society liberals may have had good intentions, the net result of their socialist endeavors has been the institutionalization of poverty, and the victimization and enslavement of what has become the Left’s most reliable constituency of any stripe or association: black folks.

These days, a candidate for office can count on receiving 90-plus percent of the black vote in any election, so long as he has that all-important “D” next to his or her name.

Generations of Americans have become accustomed to being given, or at least promised, fish caught by someone else. Today, Barack Hussein Obama and his socialist bourgeoisie have banked their entire political fortunes on classist rhetoric, promoting disparity in order to foster dependence.

Once was the time that the Democrat Party was the embodiment of individual responsibility and states’ rights. But the party was led astray by “useful idiots” on the Left, and by the end of Franklin Roosevelt’s reign, the Party had been turned on end.

Indeed, the most famous of former Democrats, when asked why he left that once-proud party, replied, “I did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me.” That, of course, was Ronald Reagan.

Now, the Democrat Party, with Obama and his Leftists cadres leading the charge, is determined to break the back of free enterprise and thereby ensure an impoverished voting majority. And they’re well on the way to doing so.

The objective of Obama’s “fundamental transformation of the United States of America” is to replace free enterprise with a “social democracy,” which Merriam-Webster aptly defines as “1: a political movement advocating a gradual and peaceful transition from capitalism to socialism by democratic means; 2: a democratic welfare state that incorporates both capitalist and socialist practices.”

Unfortunately, whether it’s Marxist, Nationalist or Democratic Socialism, the terminus of statism is tyranny, for as Historian Lord John Acton noted, “Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Eighteenth-century philosopher and political economist Adam Smith once wrote, “It is the highest impertinence and presumption, therefore, in kings and ministers, to pretend to watch over the economy of private people.” In his 1776 masterpiece on man and economy, “An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations,” Smith set forth that Liberty and free enterprise go hand in hand, and that should any potentate of state attempt to centralize the economy, that would most certainly be the end of Liberty.

Today, we Americans, in this last “Shining City on a Hill,” stand at the precipice separating Liberty from tyranny.

In a few short weeks, we’ll learn whether our nation is going to plant its feet firmly, shout “Enough!” and fight for the restoration of Essential Liberty, or be pushed yet another step closer to the abyss of totalitarianism.

With less than a month until the midterm referendum on the most menacing socialist agenda in U.S. history, I’m reminded of a pamphlet published in 1916 by an outspoken advocate for Liberty, William J. H. Boetcker. He entitled his tract “The Ten Cannots,” and it fittingly contrasts the competing political and economic agendas of the right and left in this era: “You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.”

Indeed.

In the meantime, let us stand firm against the Poverty Pimps, and, noli nothis permittere te terere (Don’t let the bastards get you down)!

Most Voters Say Government Encourages Illegal Immigration

While the headlines have cooled a bit in recent weeks, voters feel more strongly than ever that the federal government is encouraging illegal immigration and that states like Arizona have the answer to the problem.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 62% of Likely U.S. Voters believe the policies and practices of the federal government encourage people to enter the United States illegally, up six points from October of last year. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Only 23% disagree and think the federal government is not encouraging illegal immigration, but another 16% are not sure.

Sixty-three percent (63%) of voters now favor passage of an immigration law like Arizona’s in their own state, despite the U.S. Justice Department’s highly-publicized lawsuit challenging the law in court. That’s a four-point increase from late July. Twenty-six percent (26%) oppose such a law in their state.

Honoring Our Country’s Flag

Do you live in a community of flag flyers?  I’m happy to say that I do. Several of my neighbors fly the Stars and Stripes proudly every day of the year. My immediate neighbor has his up shortly after dawn and takes it down solemnly every night at dusk.

But it’s not just my neighbor. On July 4 and then again on Sept. 11 there were flags flying on most of the houses in our neighborhood. One gentleman had an entire row of them running along the sidewalk in front of his house.

How about in your neighborhood; and at your house?  If you haven’t been flying the U.S. flag lately may I encourage you to do so?  You’ll feel better seeing the Stars and Stripes waving bravely in the wind. And so will the other people who see it; or at least most of them, I bet.

I think there may be an age thing going on here. I live in a community of people who are mostly retired. Heck, I’m supposed to be retired myself, but I got so bored after I sold the company I founded, I had to find something to do or my wife was going to kill me. Well, not really. But there are only so many hinges you can oil and light bulbs you can change.

So I took on a part-time job. Then another one. Then a third one. Now I find myself with more to do than when I was working full-time. No complaints, you understand. Writing three columns a week for Personal Liberty — and seeing some of the comments and controversy they stir up — is one of the great joys of my life.

Back to the flag. I’m sure there are many communities where it would be hard to find a flag flying, even on the 4th of July. If you happen to live in one of them I feel sorry for you. And even more for your neighbors; sounds like they may be such poor citizens they don’t even read Straight Talk.

But here’s an idea: Why don’t you try to start a new trend?  Go to your local hardware store and buy a flag and a mount for it. It will only cost you a few dollars. 

Put it up near your front door or on a tree in your front yard. Or on your garage or by an attic window; you’ll know where it makes the most sense.

Then start flying it and see what happens. Every day is a good day to fly the flag, but some holidays are especially appropriate. I’ve already mentioned the 4th of July and Sept. 11. Later this month there’s Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 11) and Navy Day (Wednesday, Oct. 27). Don’t forget Veterans Day on Nov. 11, or Thanksgiving two weeks later.

By the way, if you would like to have a really special flag to fly outside your home, here’s an idea: Get one that has flown over the U.S. Capitol. You may not know it, but it’s possible to order such flags through your United States Senator. In fact, you can go one better — you can request one be flown on a specific day of the year, such as your anniversary or birthday.

Years ago I got one for my mother that had been flown on her birthday. She was so thrilled, she cried. She had me mount it right outside her front door. We put a spotlight near it so she could fly it at night. (Contrary to what many people think, the U.S. Flag Code says it’s perfectly all right to fly the flag at night, so long as it is properly illuminated.)  Whenever I pulled into her driveway, her flag was one of the first things I saw. And I always felt better when I did.

If you don’t know who your U.S. Senators are (you have two of them), let me tell you how to find out. Just click here for the government website and type in your state. When you do, the names, addresses, and contact information for your senators will appear. Pick one, call his or her office, and a member of their staff will be delighted to be of assistance.

And here’s an extra treat: Your flag will arrive with a certificate from the Architect of the Capitol certifying that your flag was flown as requested. If you mention that the flag is for a special occasion that information will be included on the form. Perhaps you know someone, like my mother, who would be thrilled to receive such a gift. May I remind you that Christmas is just three months away?

Let me mention a couple of other things you may not have known about the proper etiquette for flying the U.S. flag:

  • The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered more slowly. This applies more to raising it on a flag pole than it does to mounting it on your home, but keep it in mind.
  • The flag should never be allowed to touch the ground (or the water, if on a boat). But it is not true that if the flag does touch the ground, it should be destroyed.
  • When a flag becomes too faded to be a fitting emblem for our country, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. If you are in doubt how to do this, your nearest American Legion or VFW Post will be delighted to assist you.
  • If the flag is to be flown at half-mast, it should first be hoisted to the peak, then lowered half-way down. It should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
  • If you are ever at an event where the “Pledge of Allegiance” or the Star-Spangled Banner is performed, the proper thing to do is to stand at attention with your right hand over your heart. (Servicemen and women in uniform should salute.)  If you are wearing a hat or cap, remove it and hold it in your right hand, with the hat at your left shoulder. If others are not as respectful of the flag during such a ceremony, it is appropriate to remonstrate with them. If you’re at an athletic event when this happens, the ushers should do so.
  • And — I think you knew this — no other flag should ever be flown higher than the flag of the United States. In fact, our nation’s flag should always take precedence wherever it is flown. The only exception to this rule (and it’s not one I’m happy with) is at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City. There, all country flags are flown equally high, and the U.N. flag is flown a little bit higher. You can guess how I feel about this.
  • Finally, when the flag is used to cover a casket, it should be so placed so that the union is at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should not be lowered into the ground but carefully removed and folded. Last year I was honored to be invited to the burial with full military honors — including a horse-drawn caisson and 21-gun salute — of a friend at Arlington Cemetery. It was so incredibly moving that I still get goose-bumps remembering it.

By the way, the U.S. Flag Code specifically prohibits wearing the U.S. flag or any clothing based on its design. I know that many people think wearing a jacket, polo shirt, or sweater that consists of the stars and stripes is somehow a demonstration of their patriotism. I appreciate the sentiment but it’s not appropriate. If you own such attire, please dispose of it.

If you are going to wear a lapel pin of the flag or part of it, it should be worn on the left lapel near the heart. I’ve been guilty of violating this one myself. In fact, it wasn’t until I read the Flag Code, in preparation for this article, that I realized my error.

Obama’s Glaring Omission

At the Congressional Hispanic Caucus meeting Sept. 15, President Barack Obama quoted from the Declaration of Independence during his speech.

In talking about what bound together the people from so many cultures and made them Americans, he said, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; endowed with certain unalienable rights: life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

What the Declaration actually says is: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness (capital letters in original manuscript, emphasis added).”

What he left out of the quote is significant for a couple of reasons. First, it demonstrates that Obama is probably not a Christian, White House protestations to the contrary. I realize that his mouthpieces have said he is, but a Christian is known by his works. And forsaking the assembly of the saints (Heb. 10:25) for more than two years is not the work of a Christian. It’s more than likely — based on Obama’s actions and what is known about his upbringing — that Obama is either an atheist or agnostic.

But being a Christian is not a prerequisite for holding the office of President, and Obama’s faith — or lack thereof — is his own business.

The second, and main reason, the omission is important is that it demonstrates Obama’s view of where our rights come from. Obama views the Constitution as a list of negative rights: That is, a list of things the government is not allowed to do. And he thinks that is a bad thing, as he has said on more than one occasion.

Obama believes that government is Supreme, and if he worships anything it is at the altar of Big Government.

If Obama were to acknowledge that our rights come from a Creator he would have to acknowledge that only the Creator can take those rights away. But if government grants those rights, as Obama believes, then government can take them away whenever and however it so desires.

Do you know the importance of this day?!!!

On this day 223 years ago the Constitution of the United States of America, was signed… and a great Nation a Republic was born.

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. … Done…the seventeenth day of September, in the year of our LORD one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven.” –George Washington and the delegates

I hope you take the time to read and to your children, the Constitution. Ponder upon the greatness of this Blessed Nation, a Christian Nation a Nation under God. Not only what it means to be a free American but ask your self; what am I doing to make sure it stays that way. What are we doing? Are we doing our part to educate and install the values of our Founding Fathers unto next generations? We must start today!
